It is imperative that students maintain a minimum of 2 classes per week or an average of 8 classes per month.
Each of the 6 stripes per belt will be awarded after attending 12 classes. It may take a student 9 months to earn a belt if they were to only attend two classes per week. However, there are no minimum amount of classes required to earn each belt. Typically we begin to watch a student closer in class when they reach their 4th stripe.
Of course there are other factors, like a student's natural ability, their level of passion for the martial arts, their motivation for diligent training outside of the Dojo and most importantly, their attitude, behavior and depth of character as it is at home and in school. These are just a few of the factors that determine the length of time that is required to reach each belt.
Below is a time frame to perhaps put this in better perspective for you.
Black Belt 64-128 months
Beginner Belts 8-16 months
Advanced White Belt 4-8 months

Stripes are not used to determine when a student will test for their belt. Rather, they are used as a gauge by which both student and instructor are able to set goals in earning a belt.
It is not our intent to ever make anyone feel guilty about their lack of attendance. Nor do we want to stress any family who is unable to average at least two classes per week. Instead, it is simply our intent to inform and remind everyone of how important consistent attendance is to a student's timely progression to black belt.
Please remember, black belt is not the end of the road. It is actually the beginning! We sometimes have to remind students and/or their parents, that a black belt is simply, "A serious beginner in the Martial Arts":) I would encourage each and every student to simply enjoy the process of learning the Martial Arts and for the parents to not become obsessed with time frames about earning black belt. As I often remind the kids, "It's just a piece of cloth!" More important than the process, is what it represents and the diligence that's learned on the road to black belt!
For the parents that are trying to be as economical as possible in getting their child to black belt we would caution you about attempting to take the quick road in your child's character education, by trying to hurry their training. We've trained hundreds of Martial Artists for almost a 30 year span and have a pretty good idea of when a student is ready for their black belt. We've NEVER prematurely promoted anyone we felt wasn't ready to black belt, nor have we unnecessarily prolonged their promotion. They receive their black belt only when we believe that they have reached their maximum potential and not before. If that student and/or their parents EVER begin to doubt our ability to discern when they are ready for their black belt, that lack of trust will have an influence in this process.
For families who are concerned about whether they will have enough time to earn their black belt before college or any other time constraint, we highly recommend that you take advantage of our expanded and unlimited class schedule. If you are unable to do that, due to other commitments, we will help you to plan out a regimented training routine to be implemented at home or here at the Dojo on your own time.
If ever you or your child become discouraged or overwhelmed with any aspect of our training, please contact us ASAP, as it will quickly destroy a student's chances of ever earning the rank of "Sensei".
